Canada’s Gov. Gen. Mary Simon encouraged Canadians to work together on reconciliation as she marked the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Ottawa on Friday.

“Have the hard discussions,” Simon said, as she urged Canadians to raise the topic of reconciliation with family and friends.

“This is difficult work, but necessary and rewarding,” she added.

Ceremonies, marches and gatherings were scheduled across Canada on Friday to observe the federal statutory holiday, also known as Orange Shirt Day, which was established last year following the discovery of suspected unmarked burial sites at former residential schools.
