Indigenous adoptees rediscover roots through community program

CA, 01 Oct 2022
A new B.C. program has been designed to help Indigenous people disconnected from their communities to return home.

It was created by a woman who grew up with adoptive non-Indigenous parents, ones who decided not to tell her that she was First Nations. It would be 50 years later before she would seek out the truth herself.

She's among more than 150 children taken from Splatsin between about 1960 and 1980, a time referred to as the "Sixties Scoop." That was a significant portion of the population of her home nation, leaving behind just 300 people in the community.

Neetu Garcha reports.
