Americans on both sides of the abortion debate turned up in droves outside the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. on Friday after the nation’s top court removed the constitutional right to abortion, overruling the landmark case Roe v. Wade.

In the decision posted online, the court ruled that the U.S. Constitution "does not confer a right to abortion," adding that the authority to regulate abortion would be "returned to the people and their elected representatives."

The outcome of the court's ruling is sure to reverberate across the country and on the campaign trail ahead of the fall midterm elections, which will determine which party controls Congress.

Thirteen states have passed "trigger laws" that will ban abortions almost immediately now that the court has handed down its final decision. Six more states have abortion ban laws on the books that predate Roe, which will likely now come into effect.
