Ukraine could receive over 100 Leopard 2 tanks from 12 countries once Germany gives them approval

Telegraph, 24 Jan 2023
Ukraine will receive 100 Leopard 2 tanks from 12 countries once Germany gives them approval, under an agreement reached behind closed doors.

A senior Ukrainian official told ABC News that the deal was made last Friday at the US air base at Ramstein.

Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Spain, are reportedly willing to send some of their tanks to assist Ukraine but would require German consent.

Boris Pistorius said Chancellor Olaf Scholz is talking to allies about sending Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine and a decision to ship them could come in the next few days.

The German defence minister told the broadcaster ZDF: “I am preparing for a possible decision to send the Leopard tanks and to allow other European and NATO partners to do the same.

He added: “If the decision takes one or two days, then that’s just the way it is.”

Germany's government appeared to be split on Monday night after chancellor Olaf Scholz overruled his own foreign minister to insist Poland would need to follow the rules over sending tanks to Ukraine.
