Ukraine schools closed by war: uncertainty lingers for students' return

CA, 24 Jun 2022
As Canadian parents think ahead to how their children will spend the summer before a return to school in the fall, families in Ukraine have different considerations.

When Russia invaded in February, classes abruptly ended. At two schools in Ukraine toured by Global News, there are no students to see or hear, only the disturbing sound of distant artillery fire shatters the quiet.

In total, learning losses in Ukraine can amount to over one year, due to extended pandemic-related closures and the war, according to analysis conducted for the World Bank.

The long-term effects of the learning loss “could be substantial, with future earnings losses of more than 10 per cent a year per student,” the report warns.

And now, there are concerns about whether school can resume more normally in the fall. Sean O’Shea reports from eastern Ukraine.
