Monkeypox is not a new disease - we’ve known the virus can infect humans since 1970. But until now, it has largely been confined to countries in west and central Africa, where it is endemic.

The latest outbreak is concerning scientists because of the global scale, and the risk that the virus will gain a permanent foothold in countries where it hasn’t previously existed.

But what is monkeypox, and how do you know if you’re infected?
