Tearful Alok Sharma apologises to Cop26 as deal overshadowed by last-minute concessions on coal
Telegraph, 14 Nov 2021
Alok Sharma offered an emotional apology to Cop26 on Saturday as the agreement of a historic climate deal was overshadowed by last-minute concessions on coal.
The deal was hailed as an important step towards keeping the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C "alive" as delegates from across the world agreed to the Glasgow Climate Pact.
Drama engulfed the critical vote on the plan, however, after negotiators bowed to India and China's demand for the wording of a commitment on coal power to be watered down from "phase-out" to "phase down".
Mr Sharma, the president of COP, appeared uncharacteristically moved by the interventions, appearing to fight back tears as he gave an apology to the conference.
He said: "I apologise for the way this process has unfolded. I am deeply sorry. I also understand the deep disappointment but I also think, as you have noted, that it is vital that we protect this package."
