Some leading musicians and members of the public in China are questioning the recent censure of renowned pianist Li Yundi. Chinese state media reported in late October 2021 that Li had been detained by Beijing police for soliciting a prostitute. The news resulted in several affiliated organisations cutting ties with Li and a ban on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. But some musicians have since called for more tolerance. While illegal in China, paying for sex is a minor infraction that typically results in a maximum 15 days’ detention. Known as the “piano prince”, Li rose to fame at the age of 18 when he won the prestigious Frederic Chopin international piano competition.
