China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee passed a new law on October 23, 2021, barring parents from placing excessive academic pressure on their children. The new family education law is the latest in a series of laws Beijing introduced in 2021 to promote better balance of children’s development. They include a move banning for-profit private tutoring in July, and another, passed in August, limiting the number of hours kids spend playing online video games.
