Prize-winning author Ge Fei on the art of modern Chinese literature

Literature provides a unique insight into our understanding of the human experiences. This year, many English readers embarked on a fictional journey set in late 20th-century China through a young woman named Xiumi, who came of age during a turbulent time in Chinese history. The book is "Peach Blossom Paradise," written by Chinese novelist Ge Fei and translated into English by Canaan Morse from the U.S. It was even shortlisted for the prestigious National Book Award. Tian Wei talked to both the author and the translator about stories behind the book, and why translated literature matters in today's world. First up, we have novelist Ge Fei who began publishing short stories in the 1980s and quickly established himself as a forerunner of experimental contemporary literature in China. In 2016, he was awarded the Mao Dun Literary Prize. "Peach Blossom Paradise" is his third book to be translated into English.
