Nova Scotia wildfires: Premier gives update on out-of-control blazes, evacuations | LIVE

CA, 31 May 2023
Wednesday could be a “difficult day” for the crews fighting a fire in the Halifax area, as high temperatures and low humidity continues to pose a challenge, according to officials. The Halifax-area fire is one of three out-of-control wildfires burning in the province, straining resources and forcing evacuations.

In an update Wednesday morning, David Steeves, a technician of forest resources with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area has now grown to 837 hectares, an increase of nearly 50 hectares since the previous day.

On Tuesday, Nova Scotia premier announced that the province is implementing a province-wide ban on travel and activity in the woods as wildfires rage on. “We have to do what we can to make sure we don’t have any new fires popping up,” Premier Tim Houston said during a government update on the situation from Shelburne, N.S.

The ban means no hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and use of off-highway vehicles in wooded areas as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, he said. It also applies to forestry, mining industries, and commercial activity on Crown lands, though special permits can be obtained in certain cases but that must be arranged with local NRR offices.
