Nova Scotia wildfires: Emergency officials provide latest update on fires, evacuations | LIVE

CA, 31 May 2023
Wednesday could be a “difficult day” for the crews fighting a fire in the Halifax area, as high temperatures and low humidity continues to pose a challenge, according to local officials. The Halifax-area fire is one of three out-of-control wildfires burning in the province, straining resources and forcing evacuations.

In an update Wednesday morning, David Steeves, a technician of forest resources with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area has now grown to 837 hectares, an increase of nearly 50 hectares since the previous day.

“We attribute that to some of the fire behaviour that we did see yesterday, as well as some more accurate mapping on our behalf,” he said.

“Winds out of any southerly direction… they’re going to continue to eat away at the remaining moisture in the fine fuels, those leaves and those twigs on the ground that carry the fire, to other avenues of the wildland environment,” Steeves said. He added it could be “very dangerous for the folks on the ground.”
