Network Rail's chief negotiator says the company is "on the right path" to reach a deal to avert future rail strikes.

Tim Shoveller said the company may be able to repurpose September's offer to unions and resubmit a deal.

A 48-hour walkout by 40,000 RMT union members is severely disrupting rail services as many people return to work after the Christmas break.

The strike is the first of two planned this week by the RMT in England, Scotland and Wales - members of drivers' union Aslef will walk out on Thursday.
