Millions of monarch butterflies have descended on central Mexico, as part of their annual winter migration.
The monarch butterfly was recently designated an ‘endangered species’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
Every year, monarch butterfly populations from Canada and the United States fly thousands of miles south in the largest migration of any insect species known to science.
And efforts to protect their hibernation grounds are more important than ever.

Al Jazeera’s Manuel Rapalo reports from Mexico’s Michoacan state.
