New Zealand’s new prime minister has been sworn in, but 44-year-old Chris Hipkins now faces an uphill battle to lead the ruling Labour Party to victory in October’s election amid rising inflation and a looming recession.
Hipkins was the only candidate in the governing Labour Party’s leadership contest. He replaces Jacinda Ardern, who announced her unexpected resignation six days ago, saying she was too tired to carry on.
