Monterey Park shooting: LA County sheriff speaks as death toll climbs to 11 | LIVE

CA, 24 Jan 2023
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna is expected to provide an update Monday on the Monterey Park mass shooting that occurred on Saturday, leaving 10 people dead and another 10 injured.

Authorities confirmed Sunday that the suspect in the shootings had also died, as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hospital officials said in a statement Monday one of the injured "succumbed to their extensive injuries," raising the death toll to 11.

Police say the suspect is 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, and that several pieces of evidence linking Tran to the shootings in Monterey Park were found inside a white van involved in a standoff with authorities in Torrance, Calif. Authorities say a handgun was also found inside the van and there are no outstanding suspects in the mass shootings.

Though the suspect is dead, the motive is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing, law enforcement officials added in the update on Sunday. Chief Scott Wiese said Monday that they may "never know why" Tran committed the crime, but he had yet to be briefed on what was found during the execution of search warrants. However, he cautioned it may only lead to a "fragmented why."

The tragedy marked the fifth mass killing in the U.S. since the start of the year. It is also the deadliest since May 24, 2022, when 21 people were killed in a school in Uvalde, Texas, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S.
