Environmental activists assembled outside the Japanese prime minister’s office in Tokyo on January 19, 2023, to protest against the government’s decision to discharge water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean as early as the spring. While the government claims the discharge is safe, activists say that certain radioactive isotopes are impossible to filter out, and would decimate nearby fishing grounds.
