Dangerous levels of smog have hung heavy over the city of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, for weeks as farmers in neighbouring Laos and Myanmar set fire to fields and forests to prepare for the coming growing season. Chiang Mai was named the world’s third-most-polluted city by the air monitoring website IQAir as air quality plunged to hazardous levels. The current smog crisis is hurting the popular tourist destination’s already battered economy and hindering its post-pandemic recovery efforts.
