Myanmar's military government pardoned more than 2,100 prisoners on May 3, 2023 to mark an important Buddhist holiday, among them a journalist and numerous political prisoners. Rights groups said that since overthrowing an elected government in 2021, Myanmar's military has detained thousands of opponents. Many were charged with inciting people to break the law. The military said the legal system had treated all detainees fairly. It warned that if released prisoners reoffended, they would go back to jail
