'Khartoum isn't Kabul, even the Taliban wanted calm': Sudan evacuations | Defence in Depth
Telegraph, 27 Apr 2023
In Afghanistan it was in the Taliban’s interest for a calm and ordered evacuation; they wanted us out and gone rather than snarled up there, fighting our way out.
While in Sudan it may on paper be a permissive environment - we were granted permission from both warring parties to evacuate - there has been fighting in the streets and ceasefire violations.
Both sides may have blamed ceasefire breakdowns on each other; some may have calculated it would be in their interest to stage an outrage to blame on the other side, and therefore garner international support for their cause.
And the UK could get caught up in the crossfire.
