There are two battles happening right now in Bakhmut, the blasted Donbas city in east Ukraine.

The first battle has reduced the city to a ruin and seen the deaths of hundreds of soldiers each day.

The second is a power play from within the Kremlin - a power struggle that has manifested on the ground as Russian factions turn to infighting.

Different factions compete for dominance over Bakhmut and that Russian political gold dust - the favour of President Vladimir Putin.

Defence in Depth is a weekly output of high quality comment, news and analysis of the big defence stories.
