Ukraine calls Russia's UN Security Council presidency "absurd"

CA, 03 Apr 2023
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that Russia taking over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) — part of a monthly rotation — was "absurd" and that it showed the institution's "total bankruptcy."

Russia took on the role on Saturday of the UN's top security body. The last time it held the role was in February 2022, when its troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also called for the reform of global institutions, including the UNSC.

"There is no form of terror that Russia has not already committed," he said. "The reform that is obviously overdue — to prevent a terrorist state and any other state that wants to be a terrorist from destroying the peace."

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also spoke out on Friday ahead of Russia assuming the role and said the U.S. was calling on the member state to act professionally in the role. But she cautioned that they expected Russia to continue to use its seat on the council to "spread disinformation and to try to distract from the attempt to justify its actions in Ukraine and the war crimes members of its forces are committing."
