Donald Trump left his Florida home Monday bound for New York where he will surrender to criminal charges, taking the United States into uncharted and potentially volatile territory.

A small convoy left Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago mansion shortly after 12.30pm, 5pm in the UK to head to West Palm Beach airport, where he will board his private jet.

Supporters of Mr Trump lined the route, around a 10 minute-drive, to watch him become the first American president to travel to court to answer criminal charges.

Mr Trump reportedly faces multiple counts in an indictment, yet to be unsealed, including at least one felony, related to hush money paid to a porn star during the 2016 White House race.
