Tens of thousands of revellers, including hordes of foreign tourists sporting floral shirts and plastic water guns, descended on the streets of Bangkok on April 13, 2023, for the biggest traditional new year gathering since the pandemic. The country is celebrating the return of its annual Songkran water festival. It is normally held April 13-15 but has been either banned or partly restricted in recent years because of Covid-19. The return of Songkran festivities also signalled hopes for a strong recovery in the tourism sector, which is seen as a key driver of Thailand’s economy.
