Title 42 ends: US officials speak as country prepares to limit asylum claims at Mexico border | LIVE
CA, 10 May 2023
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Ricardo Zuniga will provide an update Wednesday on "planning and operations" ahead of the lifting of Title 42 on May 11.
Mayorkas said Friday the U.S. would finalize a new regulation by Thursday that will deny asylum to many migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, the same day sweeping COVID-19 restrictions at the border are set to end.
The measure is a key part of President Joe Biden's plan to address an expected rise in illegal immigration when COVID-19 restrictions known as Title 42 end, along with the broader pandemic public health emergency.
Title 42 was first implemented in March 202 at the beginning of the pandemic to stem the spread of the coronavirus in crowded detention settings. It allows border agents to rapidly expel migrants to Mexico.
Its repeal is expected to lead to a rise in border arrivals as a result of pent-up demand and the perception among migrants that they will be let in.
