The expulsion of a Canadian diplomat was “just and necessary,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Tuesday as Beijing retaliated against Canada’s decision to declare a Toronto-based consular official “persona non grata.”

China told Canada’s Consulate General in Shanghai, Zhen Yihui, to leave, escalating already tense relations amid concerns about Chinese influence in Canada.

“Based on lies, the Canadian government has taken wrong actions that seriously damage the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.

Canada expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei Monday after the Globe and Mail reported that he was involved in an alleged plot to target Conservative MP Michael Chong and his family in Hong Kong.
