During a visit to Seoul, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol said they are committed to strengthening ties amid a rising threat from North Korea. The agreement announced at a joint press conference on May 7, 2023, was reached despite unresolved historical disputes that have soured relations between the two US allies for decades. Kishida is the first Japanese leader to visit South Korea in 12 years.
