The Indonesian fishing town of Labuan Bajo is hosting the 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders summit, which gets under way on May 9, 2023. The event takes place on eastern Indonesia’s Flores island, which was once a quiet resort getaway. But it has struggled to get back on its feet since its tourism industry was battered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The town is now hoping for an economic boost from the arrival of global leaders, though critics say the publicity could do more harm than good to local communities.
