‘The Starling Girl’ is a delicate coming-of-age tale

(18 May 2023) Laurel Parmet’s directorial debut puts the viewer in the shoes of a 17-year-old girl who grew up in a Christian fundamentalist community in Kentucky and has internalized its teachings, feeling deep shame for drawing attention to herself and her body. But her world starts to change when Owen, a handsome 28-year-old youth leader, returns from a mission. “The Starling Girl” is in theaters now.
