Alberta wildfires: Officials provide update as smoke-filled air quality rated worst globally | LIVE
CA, 23 May 2023
Officials in Alberta provided an update on Monday about the dozens of wildfires that continue to burn across the province, as much of Alberta has been blanketed with smoke for days. As of Sunday afternoon, Alberta Wildfire said 10,678 people across the province remain out of their homes because of evacuation orders triggered by wildfires.
According to data tracked by the World Air Quality Index, a non-profit project that collects information from air-monitoring stations around the globe, Alberta had the worst air quality in the world on Sunday. As of 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Environment Canada’s website said Calgary’s air quality was rated at 10 on the air quality health index, considered “high risk.”
The fires have destroyed or damaged 275 buildings across Alberta, including homes, businesses, outbuildings and other structures as they blazed a path of destruction 10 times the size of the Calgary area.
“Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour,” a Sunday alert by Environment Canada, Alberta Environment and Parks, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services read. “Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Continue to take actions to protect your health and reduce exposure to smoke.”
