Trudeau makes announcement on affordability plan, takes questions | LIVE
CA, 12 Oct 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to make an announcement Wednesday regarding his government's plan to "make life more affordable" for Canadians.
Trudeau will be joined by House Leader Mark Holland and Jennifer O'Connell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.
The prime minister unveiled the details of a plan to try to help Canadians cope with the soaring cost of living. The $4.5-billion plan includes a six-month boost to the GST tax credit, a dental benefit for some chilldren, and a one-time top-up of the Canada Housing Benefit.
When unveiling his government's plan in September, Trudeau defended against claims it would contribute to inflation.
"I think the most important thing is to understand there are Canadians out there who are really hurting... what we're doing with these specific measures is targeting the most vulnerable, those most hard-hit by increases in inflation," he said.
"They are also sufficiently targeted that we are confident they will not contribute to increased inflation."
