Trudeau makes announcement as national handgun freeze comes into effect | LIVE
CA, 21 Oct 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to be joined in Vancouver by Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino on Friday to make an announcement and take questions from the media.
It comes as the federal government's national freeze on the import, buying, sale or otherwise transfer of handguns has taken effect in Canada. It was announced earlier this year as part of a broader firearms-control package that would allow for the automatic removal of gun licences from people who have committed domestic violence or engaged in criminal harassment and included increasing the maximum penalties for gun smuggling and trafficking to 14 years from 10.
Attorney General David Lametti and Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien, both spoke about the freeze taking effect earlier, with Ien calling it the "most decisive action that any government has taken in a generation to address the issue of gun violence."
