Russian reservists train for war in Ukraine, how to combat the “Bandera smoothie”

CA, 07 Oct 2022
Freshly called-up reservists were being trained in Russia's southern Rostov region on Tuesday, with a particular focus on how to deal with petrol bomb attacks and strike back with their own fiery assault.

One instructor, Alexander, was seen teaching former civilians how to use portable flame throwers. Alexander said the weapon was "very effective" against the enemy's pillboxes and in urban warfare.

The instructor said the Ukrainian territorial defence force were prone to using petrol bombs, and that they now called what most know as a "Molotov cocktail" a "Bandera smoothie" - after Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist leader during the Second World War.

Bandera is considered a national hero by the Ukrainian political establishment and many members of the general public but labelled as a traitor and Nazi collaborator by Soviet, and now Russian, propaganda.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the "partial mobilization" of some 300,000 draftees on Sept. 21.

On Sept. 30, Russia formally annexed four Ukrainian regions in the east and south of the country after a series of so-called referendums which failed to gain international recognition.
