Russian rocket attack 'targets' British humanitarian aid group in Ukraine | Life on the frontline

Telegraph, 26 Nov 2022
A Russian rocket attack barely missed a British humanitarian aid group who were desperately racing to flee a hot zone in Ukraine.

During their journey, the group were foiled by a temporary bridge giving way and a flat tyre and were left stranded outside of Kherson city as critical evacuation time slipped by.

Jack Ross is a volunteer aid worker leading a British humanitarian group that delivers essential food and medical supplies to civilians and soldiers living and fighting on the Ukrainian frontline.

He and the other members of his charity, Vans Without Borders, brave countless dangers as they travel along bombed-out roads.

This instance was the closest they'd ever been to a Russian rocket attack.

"It's heartbreaking. We got rocket attacked when we were handing out aid," said Jack Ross in shock. "The Russians are just over there."

He added: "We're pretty f---- exposed here guys."

Thankfully the group got back on the road after frantically changing the flat tyre while shelling continued all around them.

However, they soon realised the wheel had been mounted on a slant and were left with no choice but to stop again.

As they worked on the tyre, sinister lights from a drone were spotted hovering above them.
"Unsure if it's Ukrainian or Russian but its' not great," said Jack as the fleet mechanic worked on getting the car roadworthy.

"It was surreal but another day for us if you're going to go to hot areas," he added, unnervingly calm despite how close his team came to not getting back to safety this time.
