The number of coronavirus cases in Beijing hit a new daily record of 1,438 on November 21, 2022, prompting calls for more residents of the Chinese capital to stay home. The city also reported two new deaths attributed to Covid-19, following another three over the weekend, which were the first reported in China since May. Nationwide case numbers are also approaching figures seen when infections peaked in April. Cases in the southern city of Guangzhou and the southwestern municipality of Chongqing accounted for about half of the overall total.
