The West should act now to stop the rise of a totalitarian China, Liz Truss warned in a speech in Japan early on Friday morning, piling pressure on Rishi Sunak to adopt a tougher stance.

The former prime minister used her first public speech since standing down in October to call for Taiwan to be given more support to build its defences.

It follows an intervention earlier this month to defend her tax-cutting mini-Budget, which split opinion among Tory MPs and was seen as an attempt to urge Mr Sunak to adopt more pro-growth policies.
