Guilbeault, Fortier announce new initiatives to reach Canada's Net-Zero emissions goal | LIVE

CA, 28 Feb 2023
Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault will announce new initiatives to help Canada achieve its Net-Zero emissions goal by 2050, alongside Treasury Board President Mona Fortier.

Guilbeault will make the announcement at the GOBExCHANGE 2023 conference in Toronto.

At the time of the Liberals 2022 budget in April 2022, to reach its Net-Zero goal Canada needed at least $100 billion more in annual investments. And while the government's spending plan at the time committed an additional $12.5 billion to the fight against climate change, the budget also acknowledged that the federal government can't reach its environmental targets on its own.

Meanwhile, in September 2022. a report from the Pembina Institute found that most of Canada's oilsands producers have made little progress on their goal to decarbonize the sector despite historically high profits and low capital expenditures.

Canada's six largest oilsands producers and two existing oilsands organizations have pledged to meet Canada's climate imperatives under the Pathways Alliance, an industry group that accounts for 95 per cent of the country's oilsands producers.
