On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin stunned the world by sending troops across the border into Ukraine. Tens of thousands of Russians critical of Moscow's campaign or seeking to avoid being called up to fight have left their homeland. Others have chosen to stay, torn between trying to "heal" society or seclude themselves from it. While some men and women, who support the Russian intervention, have been spurred to prepare themselves to fight in fear that the conflict could come back home.
