Anand speaks after Trudeau confirms "high-altitude object" shot down over northern Canada | LIVE

CA, 12 Feb 2023
Defence Minister Anita Anand is expected to give an update after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said an "unidentified object" that violated Canadian airspace on Saturday has been shot down over the Yukon. It came just a few hours after officials with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed an exclusive Global News report Saturday that a “high-altitude airborne object” has been detected over northern Canada.

Global News reported Saturday, citing three security sources, that NORAD was monitoring one or two more objects that may be potential spy balloons. Within minutes of publication, NORAD confirmed in a statement that they “have positively identified a high-altitude airborne object over Northern Canada.”

The news comes just a day after United States Air Force Brigadier Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed on Friday that U.S. President Joe Biden ordered fighter aircraft assigned to United States Northern Command (NORCOM) to engage and destroy a "high-altitude airborne object" in United States airspace over Alaska on Friday afternoon.

Friday and Saturday's incidents come a week after U.S. and Canadian officials first confirmed a Chinese surveillance balloon had flown over Canada and across the continental U.S. over the course of several days. The balloon was ultimately shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday.
