Poilievre's call to close Roxham Road in 30 days "reckless" amid influx of asylum seekers: minister
CA, 23 Feb 2023
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser criticized Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's call to close the Roxham Road illegal border crossing within 30 days as "reckless," saying it was "not a thoughtful approach."
He said such an approach would displace the problem to other parts of the border, a similar stance to the one Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took on Wednesday.
"The result would likely be serious risks that would fall upon vulnerable migrants who are seeking safe haven in Canada, who would be forced to potentially cross through a dangerous part of the border not knowing how the elements, particularly at this time of year, would impact themselves and their family," he told reporters.
Fraser also spoke about the concerns Quebec Premier Francois Legault had about the impact an influx of migrants at the crossing has had on his province, saying the federal government was working with provincial partners in Ontario, Quebec and, most recently, Atlantic Canada, to find communities that "have the capacity" to accommodate those seeking to move to a community that can "successfully integrate them" as they await the decision on their asylum claim.
