Telegraph, 23 Feb 2023
Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan says children ran in “sheer terror” when two gunmen fired multiple shots at Det Ch Insp John Caldwell.
“John was finishing up coaching an under-15 football team, he was accompanied by his young son,” he says.
Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot while off-duty in Omagh, County Tyrone, on Wednesday night.
The high-profile officer was shot multiple times in front of his son after coaching young people playing football.
An attempted murder investigation has been launched and Caldwell is said to be critical but stable in the hospital.
Police said they were keeping an open mind but the "primary focus" was on dissident republicans and the New IRA.
Northern Ireland's political leaders have issued a joint statement condemning the "callous" attack
While Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris called the shooting a serious, significant event.
