Ohio train derailment: NTSB preliminary report outlines cause of derailment in East Palestine | LIVE

CA, 23 Feb 2023
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the U.S. will deliver its preliminary report Thursday on its investigation into the freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio on Feb. 3.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy and director of the NTSB's Office of Railroad, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials, Robert J. Hall, will discuss rail safety and factual information from the investigation.

The derailment of the Norfolk Southern freight train led to the evacuation of the area and sparked health concerns after it was learned the train had been loaded with toxic chemicals that railroad crews then drained and burned.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg toured the wreckage on Thursday, where he met with NTSB staff.

Buttigieg has said he will push major railroads to improve safety and will seek bipartisan support in U.S. Congress to raise the cap on fines against railroads for violating safety regulations. His visit comes after EPA Administrator Michael Regan visited East Palestine earlier in the week.
