Pope Francis prayed for the victims of a powerful earthquake in Ecuador on Sunday.

''I am close to the people of Ecuador and assure them of my prayers for the dead and all those who have suffered," Francis said.

At least 14 people were killed in a strong earthquake that shook a coastal region of Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, causing structural damage to multiple homes, schools and medical centres.

The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured at magnitude 6.8, struck at a depth of 66.4 km about 10 km from the city of Balao in the province of Guayas, located just 29 km from Puna Island.
