CA, 19 Mar 2023
The death toll in Ecuador has risen to at least 12 after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit a coastal region of the country and northern Peru on Saturday, causing damage to multiple homes, schools and medical centres.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso said a second aftershock measured a magnitude of 4.8 with a third at 3.7. Eleven of the deaths occurred in the El Oro province, with one in Azuay. One of the deaths occurred when the facade of a building fell on top of a car, killing the person inside, officials said.

Emergency crews have mobilized to offer support to affected people, Lasso said in a tweet.
