People in Afghanistan and Pakistan have been burying loved ones killed by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake which struck their shared northern border on March 21, 2023. The tremors were felt up to 3,200km (2,000 miles) away, from central Asia to northern India, where one team of doctors managed despite shaking equipment and flickering lights to safely perform a C-section. But early reports from the worst-affected area near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates indicate that the region may have avoided the heavy casualty numbers normally associated with quakes of such scale.
