Honduras formally establishes ties with China, cuts relationship with Taiwan

CA, 27 Mar 2023
China formally established diplomatic ties with Honduras on Sunday, after the Central American country ended its decades-long relationship with Taiwan. The foreign ministers of the two countries signed a deal on diplomatic recognition in Beijing while Taiwan's foreign minister accused Honduras of demanding exorbitant sums before being lured away by Beijing.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told reporters separately that Taipei was breaking off formal ties with decades-long ally Honduras. The announcement came shortly after the Honduran side announced the severing of ties, saying that it recognized the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate government that represents all of China and that Taiwan is an "inseparable part of Chinese territory.”

Wu said President Xiomara Castro, who took office early last year, and her government had "always had illusions" about China, and China's "luring" had never stopped. Wu added that it felt like what Honduras wanted “was money, not a hospital,” referencing past requests.

The ending of ties with Taiwan, which dates back to the 1940s, had been expected after the Honduran foreign minister traveled to China last week to open relations and President Xiomara Castro said her government would start ties with Beijing.
