Ukrainian artillery fired at Russian forces north of Kyiv on Sunday, as Russia's advance on the capital has been stalled for days.

One soldier, whose name was not given, voiced his determination to repel Russian forces, saying they were "defending our children."

The determination and confidence appear to be a consistent feeling among some residents as well, with Kyiv resident Kateryna Laskari voicing that while she was frightened like many, she thought she would feel more fear.

"To tell the truth, I thought I would be even more frightened," she said from the village she fled to two days after Russian forces attacked. "But now I feel like a soldier. I feel that I have a lot of energy to just fight, because I know that we will win."

People from Canada to the U.K. to the U.S. are also showing their support for Ukraine, with medics and fighters volunteering to join the war effort. This past Thursday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that about 16,000 foreigners had responded to his call for people to volunteer to fight.
