The conductor of the Kyiv-Classic Symphony Orchestra said that his musicians were playing as an "action of peace" as they performed in the capital’s Maidan Square on Wednesday.

Herman Makarenko said that of the usual 60-70 members of the ensemble, only 20 remained in Kyiv. The musicians played the Ukrainian and European Union anthems, as well as other pieces.

The open-air concert, named "Free Sky" was watched in the square by people holding Ukrainian flags, and was also broadcast live on Ukrainian TV channels.

Nearby defence forces were on the streets, checking vehicles behind barricades and fortifications.
