Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis on February 16, 2022. His statement came as Russia has amassed more than 130,000 troops on its border with Ukraine, driving the European Union’s relations with Russia to their lowest point since the Cold War. The US says it is looking for a peaceful resolution to the dispute, but stands ready to impose harsh economic sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine. China has so far largely toed the line on the conflict, hoping to maintain good relations with its Russian ally and Ukraine, a key trading partner. But it remains unclear whether China would back a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
