Trucker protests: Freeland says Canada's Emergencies Act begins cracking down on convoy funds | LIVE

CA, 17 Feb 2022
Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland will hold a media availability as all eyes are on the nation’s capital on Thursday, which marks Day 21 of the continued blockade by the so-called “Freedom Convoy.”

Freeland will be joined by the Minister of Public Safety, Marco E. L. Mendicino and the President of the Queen's Privy Council of Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Bill Blair.

Police have signalled that they are preparing to end the demonstration that has paralyzed Ottawa, with fences being erected around the Senate and Parliament Hill as well.

The meeting also comes amid a debate in Parliament over the implementation of the Emergencies Act, invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday. Under the act, bringing children to the blockades, participating in the protests directly, or bringing aid such as food or fuel to those involved could result in a fine of up to $5,000 or five years in prison.
